Lenny Kravitz To Play Marvin Gaye In New Biopic

Lenny Kravitz To Play Marvin Gaye In New Biopic

A new Marvin Gaye biopic is in the works. "Rolling Stone" says Lenny Kravitz has been tapped to portray the R&B legend in the film, which Julien Temple is directing. The still-untitled project will focus on Gaye's struggle with addiction and his attempt to restart his career in the early '80s. The role isn't Kravitz's first acting gig, but it marks his first stint as a leading man following well-received supporting turns in "The Hunger Games" and Lee Daniels' "Precious." Filming will reportedly begin next year. And it looks like this attempt to tell Gaye's story is already one step ahead of previous tries. Insiders tell Deadline.com the music rights have already been sorted out.

"The Italian Job" director F. Gary Gray was set to helm a biopic titled "Marvin" back in 2008, but has since moved on to another project. Likewise, "Law and Order's" Jesse L. Martin was on board to play Gaye in a film called "Sexual Healing," but that project has apparently stalled as well.
