Bill Haley And His Comets Bassist Marshall Lytle Dies Of Cancer

The Comets have lost a founding member.  "The New York Times" says Marshall Lytle, the bassist for Bill Haley and His Comets, died over the weekend.  His partner Cathy Smith says the pioneering rocker was battling lung cancer, and passed away at his New Port Richey, Florida home on Saturday.  Lytle was 79.  Marshall was still a teenager when Bill Haley tapped him to be the bassist in his band -- then known as the Saddlemen -- back in 1950.  Lytle was a guitarist -- not a bassist -- but that didn't seem to matter to Haley, who covered the basics in a 30-minute bass lesson.  Two years later the group changed their name to Bill Haley and His Comets, who came to fame as one of rock's originators with such hits as "Rock Around the Clock" and "Shake, Rattle, and Roll."  Lytle left the Comets along with two other members of the band to for The Jodimars.  He left the music business in 1960, but returned to revive the Comets in 1987.
